Ecological relationships

Nests in

  • Pedunculate OakQuercus robur

Obligate cavity nester. Relies on large-diameter veteran oaks with natural hollows or old woodpecker excavations. One of the most extensively studied nest-site associations in European ornithology.

  • European BeechFagus sylvatica

Also uses cavities in mature Beech, particularly in continental Europe where Beech replaces Oak as the dominant veteran tree.
